About Vernus Says SURPRISE
In our busy, noisy, fast-paced world, sometimes it is the quietest characters who share the most.
Vernus is an 89-year-old man who never gets the chance to speak. Today, he is determined to find the perfect gift for his granddaughter — even if he has a little trouble getting there.
Vernus Says SURPRISE is a new solo comedy/drama/clown/mime adventure written and performed by Ken Godmere, directed by Rideau Award nominee Tania Levy and presented by Emanate Productions. The show includes an original soundscape designed and edited by Ken Godmere, featuring the vocal talents of 19 Ottawa actors.
The character Vernus, created by Godmere, first appeared in “The New R.O.H.”, a sketch-comedy show that opened December 1998 at Café Des Artistes in Ottawa’s Byward Market. Vernus became a recurring character at local improv comedy club The iNSTiTUTiON from 2000 to 2004, and in 2010, Vernus made a spontaneous and spirited return to the stage at Crush Improv’s Summer Crush and ‘Bout Time.
Exploring the experiences of the elderly in social and family relationships, Vernus Says SURPRISE also involves a very literal family connection. The show is co-produced and stage managed by Godmere’s daughter Emma, and the father-daughter duo will be hitting the road to visit six summer festivals in their first national fringe tour together.
